Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan

               Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan had her training as a disciple of the accomplished Guru Lalitha of Saraswathi Gana Nilayam, Chennai and is the third generation disciple of the famous Guru Kattumanar Muthukumaran Pillai. She has undergone training in Carnatic music under Shankara Bhagavathar and Professor P. Sambamurthy at the Madras University. She has been one of  India`s prominent Bharatanatyam exponents earning her fame as an intelligent dancer, guru, innovative choreographer, author and able administrator. 

 

  • Travelled widely both in India and abroad for recitals, lec-dems, cultural tours and workshops.
  • Awarded the Fellowship from Govt. of India in 2004 and a D.Litt in dance from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, in 2008
  • Choreographed several ballets based on  such diverse themes as mythological stories, women`s empowerment and social issues. 
  • Authored five books, the latest being a pocket book on the Classical Dances of Indiafor educational institutions and a research paper for NCERT on the Aharyam aspect of dance.
  • Released two CD`s on Subramania Bharathi`s poems, CD`s of three Margams (full course), CD on the life of Paramacharya, VSD`s of two Margams (full course) and a video of the basic Abhyas, fundamental Adavus along with Hastas, Viniyogas, Bhedas, Rasas and Gatis for educational and art institutions.
  • Lent her services to various philantrophic causes and has been a patron in many voluntary organizations for women. She was instrumental in building a school for Kathak, Sharadha Sangeet Sadan, in Bhagalpur, Bihar way back in 1972. As the founder member of Sarvam, a non profitable NGO, she imparts dance training to underprivileged children. She is the chairperson of The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, heads the screening committee for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and is a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. 
  • Is a member of many expert committees of organizations like Khairagarh University, IGNOU, Amity school of Arts, Sahitya Kala Parishad, ICCR, Defence and Culture Ministries, and is on the Board of NZCC (North Zone Cultural Centre) and Bhatkande University, Lucknow.
  • For her tireless dedication to this ancient art form, she has been conferred with numerous titles and awards by the Government, as also by various organizations and dance institutions.

Conducted 250 Arangetrams. Several disciples are professional dancers and also running art centres in various places in India and the world over.

Published four art books on classical dance and music, compiled an encyclopedia on Bharatanatyam for NCERT and wrote a fellowship Paper on the Aharya aspect of dance.
